Turning a year older can mean searching for wrinkles or gauging the weight of your skin for that papery thinness sagging into bags under your eyes. Fingers may prod for gray hairs. You lament upcoming reunions and wonder if there are enough candles in the box to chronicle your years.
Or you can choose to harness the energy that turns your personal hourglass back to the beginning at the same time each year. Use the day as your own celebration of reflection, goal setting, and growth. Embrace the years past as tools to make better decisions, brighter choices, loftier goals.
Eat cake and vow to make the upcoming year one of dreams fulfilled.

Happy (belated) Birthday, Angela!!! Enjoy your cake, and eat it too.

See, for me it helps to do both. Since I have an August birthday, it’s kind of the middle of the year and helps me stay on track!
For me birthdays had always been a time of self reflection, even as a kid. I usually have a cigar, walk on the beach, and things about the previous year or years.
