I was driving to work the other day when a song came on the radio. This song has always been one of my favourites, and it includes my favourite lyrics of all time. But, funnily enough, I’d never really paid attention to the lyrics that directly proceed those lines.
The song is called 5 Days in May and it’s by a Canadian band called Blue Rodeo. It’s a love song, but on that day I heard this particular stanza out of context and it seemed like a profound statement about life:
Sometimes the world begins / To set you up on your feet again / It wipes the tears from your eyes /
How will you ever know/ The way that circumstances go / Always going to hit you by surprise
I have a hard time accepting some of the things that happen to me. I’m a control freak who likes to plan, and when something hits me by surprise I always want to know why. And asking why isn’t always terribly productive.
What I like about those lyrics isn’t the second line but the first. No, we can’t always control things or understand why. But, in my experience, the world is quite good at wiping tears and putting us back on the right path, even under the most devastating of circumstances.
We just have to let it.
Incidentally, my all-time favourite lyrics are these:
I know my past / You were there
In everything I’ve done / You are the one
Isn’t that beautiful?
